Bernays and Lippman

Bernays’ ideas, views, and observations really instilled respect into my brain for the brilliant man.

He’s realistic in talking about propaganda shaping the minds and lives of millions. Being able to manipulate in 1925 got you just where you needed to be. Manipulation in 2012 played a huge role in Obama reaching where he wanted to be. Not much has changed in the minds of the viewers and “outside world” throughout these past 90 years. Without the propaganga campaign Obama utilized in his speeches…hell, if nobody used propaganda to get into office, how could we believe these words of informational civility they speak of?

Bernays’ take on the reluctancy to change in our traditional world was also quite eye opening. We like what we have here, minor changes to our beliefs or others are accepted occasionally but something big enough to make an immediate impact, even that for the good, is often passed over due to our love of tradition. (i.e- the cathollic church changing a response in mass but not allowing priests to marry in order to stop the molestation problems defacing the integrity of the religion.)

Lippman didn’t catch my eye as much as Bernays did, mostly because of his use of language. But there was one thing that struck my eye at first glance.

His notion of passion-less, ill-informed people attempting to discover all of the hidden truths that compile up the “right choice for an election,” is quite useless. If you are passionate enough about something, then become an expert at it, because otherwise you will always be in the shadows no matter how hard you fight.
