OK, I know this isnt due for Wednesday but I finished the other reading and had planned on doing this one tonight, so I’m trying to keep on track with my assignments. This reading was a bit difficult for me to get through. I felt like I was missing something throughout the entire thing – it just wasn’t sinking in like it should have. I do like though how Gramsci says we must look at the whole system to find a definition of an intellectual. You can’t just look at what actions someone performs, but at those actions in terms of the importance society defines them. It reminds me of the differences between Luntz and Lakoff – Luntz looks at the meanings of individual words while Lakoff looks at the whole system of language within a culture. And Gramsci’s constant focus on the intellectuals, on the elite, showed how they have the power. This is like Herman and Chomsky and their ideas that an elite group controls the media. I know this post is short but that’s all I’ve got. Perhaps if we discuss this in class I will understand it better.
